Note: this is NOT an APPStore solution – it is a WEBAPP, … When Bookmarked as a HOMESCREEN ICON this becomes readily accessed web-content, built specifically for and targeted to iPad  that can be easily linked to facebook and promoted, emailed and shared. It just looks and feels like an app and is only viewable on the iPad, single finger scroll and slide, pinch-zoom video. Navigation is direct and free-form, you never get lost in it.

1) iPad detection. CTN can add basic code to any page or site that will determine an iPad is present and redirect iPad specific content to that visitor, and track the event for later analysis in traffic / hit logs.  The result delivers much like an App Store Application, with web immediacy.

2) Panel Flip – shown in the opener – a touch to flip panel 3D animation can deliver extra content in the same space easily, can be a way to offer extra info, signups, videos, practically anything. You may have as many as you like anywhere you like. CTN can make it look like anything and have transparent areas and shapes. Flip horizontal, vertical, both, speed and easing, no problem.

3) Slider navigation – Compact accordion slider, horizontal or vertical panes, this type of navigation keeps the content on one screen, is graphical rather than simple iPhone lists, and allows expansion of content without much redesign to make it fit. Thumbnail sliders for selecting pages or viewing images is essentially unlimited. 

4) HTML5 Video - can be placed anywhere at any initial size, and will always zoom full – able to pinch in and out, stop/pause and 2 modes of full screen fit. CTN takes extra steps to deliver h.264 in its best scalable format and uses a comprehensive edge origin CDN to assure delivery. ( note that 3G AT&T limits videos to 20 megs per clip, hence this ability is best used in WiFi modes only )

5)  PageSwipe has Single finger column scroll/glide – HTML5 on iPad inherently denies this feature and requires 2 finger scroll within windowed column content. PageSwipe for iPad has single finger html5 column and row scroll. Smooth silky single finger column glide is able to display any shapes with area transparency ( see thru to back ground ) momentum glide and tall graphical content, resized to fit orientation and can include Video Players.

6) Ad Insertions : These are iPad webpages that can link directly to e-commerce and "buy" processes, with an Admin tool for time-frame insertions, tracking

9) Cache Manifest - Pre-load iPads for offline anytime anywhere use in HTML5 Presentation content for catalogs and with B2B content  - never again suffer the personalization hassles of iTunes account ownership removing your apps when sync'd. One limit  is that each cache store is limited to 5 megabytes per manifest per url.

7) Thumbnail navigation bar – does as expected including linking to multi-section content URLs and lauching ecommerce. Very easy to use and false trigger mitigated so that you don't often accidentally launch a link when all you wanted was to slide the thumbnail row.

IMPORTANT DIFFERENCES IN APPS VS HTML5

1) The "best-of" magazines in App format have 2 times the actual pages. In all cases the Landscape and Portrait content is presented in 2 different layouts to handle 2 aspect ratios of viewing. This means if you have a 100 page magazine, you will be doing 200 page layouts, which can seriously complicate the workload on Advertiser Presentations. The most impacted problem is not just the added cost of developing dual layouts, but also in the huge download that can cause. Wired Magazine is 525+ megabytes. 

2) Most Apps deny the Pinch-Zoom functions. ( complaints about that in the App store reviews tell the story ), people with an iPad expect that iPad capability extends into paid-app behaviors…

3) Apps do not require online connectivity once downloaded, so they are ready-to-read regardless of your proximity to a good 3G or WiFi. This is probably the biggest benefit to the downloadable App.

HTML5 has greater user experience VALUE

1) Videos can be streamed on both Apps and HTML5 saving space on the iPad. Cache Manifest can assure you control memory use for offline browsing, anytime or all the time. All you need to do is click and select, the method is automated.

2) HTML5 does not require an acceptance cycle to update content management software features. New features are immediate, advertiser pages can swap in and be delivered with regional validity with no need for iAD complexity.

3) HTML5 visitor tracking is just like your existing website –  much better for your tracking intelligence.

Bottomline: You do not have to cave-in to APP store situations unless you want to, CTN can create a very APP-Like solution for you that gives you and your advertisers total control and online access, social networking and that good stuff your website and the web in general already has for you. You win, your way, you get the tracking data you deserve, you can still push promote updates and email like always.  There is no Periodicals category, or Magazine Rack in the Apple App store, yet anyhow, just a vague NEWS category that has a pile of global languages, finding some magazines is a fishing expedition.

 

ColumnGlide smooth scroll…

We have made 15,000 pixels of scrolling smooth vertical column work quite well, this assures never running out of room for longer read text. Basically 5000 pixels is plenty of column to glide through, but its good to know that more and variable article length is not a problem. Video play during article scroll and reading is perfect, scroll is free-form, have it any way you prefer.

This code is clean and fast, play  the video and single finger scroll the overlay glide column at the same time.

TESTS

(As shown left)  a tall column treatment that glides over a background formatted to fit and include a video with feature blocks and a succinct  amount of descriptive text… seems to work quite well. Essentially this one is 4 topic-related segments of the content in a light drill-down with box breaks for separations, see-thru to background, variable opacity backing color panes, rather like our original February 2010 Flash demo and in line with the approach taken by Bonnier in the very cool PopSci+ product ( also our Favorite ). This framework allows you to do anything you like, a solid white background panel with black text treatment is even easier to do.

Fingers and Thumbs

Test group users scroll with their thumbs , using the corner of the ipad screen so we set the glide to "extra slippery" for that usage ( shown in video clip above ), and much like air-hockey, a good toss will send you all the way to the bottom or top. Tap to stop scroll, freeform, the edge of the column is all you need, and anywhere you touch will work.

Making it easy to find unexpected gratifying content can make the user experience a positive one that feels like an App with the instant access of the web and the smooth interaction of touch gestures. Each page can have its own distinct URL for sharing ( email, facebook and twitter are supported in PageBlend ), unlike existing App Store Magazines where getting lost in the navigation is common and direct-to-content sharing is not possible.

We have seen that Viral Sharing is the most beneficial cost-efficient mechanism of exposure for content, it is honest adoption of high value — and for that reason, enabling viral sharing behaviors is inherent in what we do.
